108An Economic Independence Story: Orange Spot Coffee

My name is Laura Cannon, and my business partner is Julie Simuang. We own and operate a small coffeehouse in the Park Circle neighborhood of North Charleston, SC that opened in June 2013. We’re proud to report that our sales are steady, and we’ve received a positive response from the surrounding community. After several friends and acquaintances urged us to become involved, we registered for the business plan workshop sponsored by the Center for Women. Our C4W mentor wanted to see us succeed and to have the confidence we needed to pursue our dreams and careers. She helped us understand how much work was involved and always pushed us higher than we thought we could climb. With her help, we secured our funding. We signed a lease. We succeeded in opening our doors. We met and exceeded our financial projections. We did it all because the leaders at the C4W Women’s Business Center have the expertise and offer services for a younger generation eager to achieve.
