For nine years, the Center for Women has sponsored an annual program called the
Centering on Women Conference.
This year's conference, "Women Educating Women," will be no different.
"We do this conference as a way to provide professional and personal development
opportunities for women in the Lowcountry," says Jennet Robinson Alterman,
executive director of the Center.
"It's based on the premise that providing information and educating women
helps them make better decisions about their lives. We don't offer opinions
or judgments, just information."
Inez Tenenbaum, the state Superintendent of Education, is the keynote speaker
of the event, which will be held Saturday at the Lightsey Center at the College
of Charleston.
She is expected to talk about how the theme "Women Educating Women" has
affected her life.

"The
event is based on financial topics, public services, physical
health, emotional health, workplace issues and general information," Alterman
says.
The
conference includes 14 workshops on topics from women in politics
to anger management to nutrition and menopause.
"You only get to go to two workshops and the question we always get is,
`How can I just choose two?'" Alterman says.
She says she is expecting about 200 people to attend the event, which for the
first time this year is offering continuing education units through the College
of Charleston.
