For the eighth spring
running, the Center for Women has invited local artists and
tastemakers (including Charleston’s own Ayoka Lucas) to design
playful, functional, and fabulous handbags to be auctioned off in
support of the center’s programs and services. Each year, the
“It’s in the Bag” Silent Auction & Reception is a
hands-down hit, with the 2008 event raising more than $40,000.
“We’ve had some amazing pieces, and I still see ladies
carrying bags from past auctions around town,” says Amanda
Bunting Comen, the center’s program coordinator.
This year’s fête
is shaping up to be particularly memorable, with a local Who’s
Who list that includes Debi Chard, Dixie Dunbar, Mary Edna Fraser,
Carol McGill, Mary Alice Monroe, Leslie Pratt-Thomas, and Leigh
Webber signed on to design. And if you needed any more motivation
to indulge in a wearable work of art, each bag comes with a
surprise tucked inside: $100 worth of merchandise or a gift
certificate from local vendors such as Fleet Landing, Amuse, Beads
on Cannon, and Parker-Sims Interiors.
Don’t plan on
bidding? Come out to enjoy an evening at the City Gallery at
Waterfront Park, where you can peruse the purses with a drink and
hors d’oeuvres in hand. “This is an event at which all
women—whether student, entrepreneur, or stay-at-home mom—can
come together to network, have fun, and browse some really unique
pieces of art,” says Comen.
