born:
August 6, 1952, in Charleston, South Carolina
education:
Bachelors degree in history and drama from Mary Baldwin College
career:
The daughter of Charleston theater legends Emmett and Patricia
Robinson, Jennet returned to Charleston after graduating from
college and began her career as a news reporter and anchorwoman
for WCSC-TV. In 1978, she took an assignment as a Peace Corps
volunteer in Afghanistan, where she worked to develop health
education materials for women in the remote areas of the country.
After returning to the U.S., Jennet accepted the position of
press secretary for then South Carolina Lieutenant Governor Nancy
Stevenson. During the 1980s, she worked closely with several women’s
organizations—including the League of Women Voters and the
Business and Professional Women’s Federation—to increase
awareness about the political process and women’s participation
in government. In 1987, she was appointed to the Peace Corps as
director for the Kingdom of Swaziland, and from 1990 to 1996 she
served on the senior staff of the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C.
Jennet returned to Charleston in 2001 and accepted the post of
executive director at the Center for Women, a position she
currently holds. In addition to her role as a world-wide women’s
advocate, she serves on the board of directors of the Lowcountry
Food Bank and the Junior League Community Advisory Board and is
one of the 2003 recipients of the Girl Scouts Women of Distinction
Award, as well as one of Skirt! magazine’s "10 Women
of the Year" in 2004. She is married to award-winning
photographer Jack Alterman, and the couple lives downtown.
At
the Center, Jennet uses her leadership, talent, and drive to
create previously unchartered paths of success for women.
