About
the Census
The
census is a count of everyone residing in the United States that
takes place every ten years. It is mandated by Congress. The first
Census was conducted in 1790 and counted 3.9 million people, less
than current population of the state of South Carolina (4.5
million). Census questionnaires will be mailed or delivered
to every household in the United States in March 2010. The
questions ask you to provide information that is accurate for your
household as of April 1, 2010. People should be counted where they
live and sleep most of the year. A second form will be mailed to
households that do not respond to the initial questionnaire
and households that still do not respond will be called or visited
by a Census worker. To learn more, visit www.census2010.gov.
