Begun from a small donation by a friend of the Center for Women who died of ovarian cancer, Lowcountry Women With Wings has concentrated on awareness of this disease since its beginning. However, in an effort to address the larger issue of women’s health awareness, the board voted this year to expand the program and awareness focus.
While ovarian cancer awareness will always be part of our programming, it is important to address the wide variety of concerns that women and their families have around health issues. These important topics will be covered by experts in the field and all will have a fun and entertaining flavor. As always, networking will play a big role in these programs.

The Fifth Annual Beard and Moustache Competition, held on May 24 at the Music Farm, was fun, exciting –and most importantly, meaningful. The event benefited Lowcountry Women with Wings, a program of the Center for Women that raises awareness for women’s health issues. “Lowcountry Women with Wings was started from a donation of a friend to the Center for Women who lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer in 2008,” explained Amy Brennan, executive director of Center for Women. “Paul Roof, organizer of the Annual Beard and Moustache event and Commander of Holy City Beard & Moustache Society, knew first-hand of the battle that women fight when diagnosed with such a serious illness.
He decided five years ago to raise money and awareness for this disease and since then, countless women have benefited through education and awareness programs.”The Lowcountry Women with Wings program at the Center for Women is now dedicated to take the message of health awareness to a broader audience by including other women’s health issues. “We will continue to focus on ovarian cancer awareness; however, the Center for Women board members believe that we must encourage women’s health in a number of ways,” says Sue Sommer-Kresse, ovarian cancer survivor and Lowcountry Women with Wings Advisory Committee member.
“The fact that HCBMS support has enabled us to educate and create awareness of ovarian cancer with the goal to decrease late stage diagnosis and save women’s lives, is truly noteworthy and admirable,” says Sommer-Kresse. Paul Roof arrived at the Center for Women’s office on Cannon Street today with a check in the amount of over $11,000. “The generosity of Paul and the members of the Holy City Beard and Moustache Society is overwhelming,” said Brennan. “We could not do this work without their support – and without the amazing leadership of Paul Roof.”
If anyone else would like to contribute, there is a GoFundMe site set up for Paul and 100% goes to the Center for Women –through today, Monday June 2. Their goal of $3,000 was met in just under 36 hours this weekend! See our website and C4W facebook page, as well as Paul Roof’s page or Holy City Beard & Moustache Society page. We have an amazing community!!
