An Economic Independence Story: Elaine's Events/Cakes of Distinction
I thank the Center for Women's SC Business Center for the incredible support I've received from them the last several months. I literally don't know how my business or I would have survived without you.
You have become my guiding light through the darkest of times. Who would have guessed after almost 20 years as a successful business owner that I would come so close to losing everything? Thanks to your one-on-one counseling and incredibly informative business educational classes, I am coming back stronger than ever!
I look forward to each and every time I walk into your doors knowing that new perspectives, hope, and exciting challenges await me. I am once again excited about what I do! With that excitement and confidence, I know I can be as successful as I choose.
Career Development Story: Getting the Job I Wanted
When I was ready to go back to work in my late 30s, I was unsue of where to start. The Center for Women was offering a resume course so I signed up immediately. The instructor was an incredible teacher/mentor, and some diligent work on my part and with edits from my instructor, I eventually secured a position at Blackbaud.
If it had not been for my mentor's skills as a teacher and storyteller, I'm certain I would have been looking for a job much longer and probably not with as much success.
Thank you to the Center and to my amazing instructor/mentor for an incredible experience that led to a wonderful career.
An Economic Independence Story: Orange Spot Coffee
My name is Laura Cannon, and my business partner is Julie Simuang. We own and operate a small coffeehouse in the Park Circle neighborhood of North Charleston, SC that opened in June 2013. We're proud to report that our sales are steady, and we've received a positive response from the surrounding community.
After several friends and acquaintances urged us to become involved, we registered for the business plan workshop sponsored by the Center for Women. Our C4W mentor wanted to see us succeed and to have the confidence we needed to pursue our dreams and careers. She helped us understand how much work was involved and always pushed us higher than we thought we could climb.
With her help, we secured our funding. We signed a lease. We succeeded in opening our doors. We met and exceeded our financial projections. We did it all because the leaders at the C4W Women's Business Center have the expertise and offer services for a younger generation eager to achieve.
