Women and Power Series
For women who want to inspire, lead and succeed
Powerful Presentations
Although women are often stereotyped as chatterboxes, in public meetings, men talk much more than we do—in both frequency and duration! In this session, you will learn a formula for designing effective messages. Whether you need to give a lengthy speech, air your concerns at a business meeting, or advocate for your favorite cause, this formula will help you contribute effectively. We will also discuss tips for increasing the power of your words by avoiding communication behaviors that deflate the impact of your contributions and replace them with behaviors that give your message strength!
Deborah Socha McGee, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and directs the Public Speaking Lab at the College of Charleston. She has over 20 years of experience teaching and consulting in the areas of public speaking, health communication, building supportive communication climates, and conflict management.

Dealing with Medical Billing
Do you ask more questions before you pay your car repair bill than you do before you pay a medical bill? Do you know what questions to ask your doctor’s office or hospital? More than 80 percent of medical bills contain mistakes; criminals can make more money committing Medicare fraud than selling drugs; and healthcare reform may be just what the "spin doctors" ordered. We'll talk about what it all means and what you can do to become an empowered patient and make the healthcare system work for you, your family and your business.
Robin Giangrande is the Director of RG Advocates - medical bill solutions. With more than 25 years of experience in health care administration and as a litigation paralegal, Robin advocates for individuals and business and provides innovative solutions for controlling healthcare costs.

Women Writers Forum
That Which Needs to be Remembered: Workshop for Women Veterans and Women Serving in the Armed Services
Often thoughts, images, and even dreams about particular experiences approach us, turn away, and then dive into some hidden place. This exciting three hour creative writing workshop offers women veterans and women members of the Armed Services a venue to recreate, in a communal space, their service related experiences. The gathering is open to non-experienced and experienced writers. The workshop will focus on writing prompts that will allow the participant to engage with the rhythmical energies of poetry that is an integral part of every female’s inner self. Participants will share their journey as honored members of our country’s Armed Services; they will read poems written by poets who have documented their experiences as service men and women throughout peaceful and war-ridden times. Women participating in this seminar will write individually, collaboratively, and learn how to make wider leaps—and take larger imaginative risks—in the writing of narrative poems.
Charlene Monahan Spearen holds an MFA degree in Creative Writing and a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition. Her work has appeared in The Southern Poetry Anthology: South Carolina, Yemmessee, Writers at Carolina, Aspects, and Promise Magazine. |
